Life

Agop Efendi was born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Agop also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.

At about 12, in 1883/84, Agop began work in Bitola, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 12 or younger. From the first annual entry, for 1887/88, to 1894/95, every annual entry places Agop in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Thessaloniki (Selanik).

Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to a peak of 380 in 1894/95, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Thessaloniki, when 26 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, eight years of salary come to 28,680 kuruş, 59 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1894/95.
