Life#
Born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Sabri Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Sabri began work in Sinop in 1896/97, at about 24, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1899/1900, with Sabri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kozlu, where the entries run to 1901/02. The last posts were in Korçë in 1902/03 and Refahiye from 1905 to 1907. For 1903 to 1905 the lists have no entry.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1899/1900, as Muhabere Memuru in Kozlu, when 18 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 21,600 kuruş, 61 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
