Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Abdüllatif Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Abdüllatif in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Abdüllatif then moved to Edirne from 1893 to 1899, then Gebze, Balıkesir and Bursa from 1899 to 1904. The last posts were in Susurluk from 1904 to 1906.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 520 in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Bursa, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 400 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
