Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1847/48 (AH 1264), Ali Rıza Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Ali Rıza had four years of schooling, at a primary school (İbtidai Mektebi), and attended the telegraph school as well.
At about 18, in 1866/67, Ali Rıza began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1870/71, places Ali Rıza in Üsküdar as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came seven places in 20 years, from Bosna to Nablus, then Edirne from 1893 to 1899. For 1878 to 1885 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Damascus in 1899/1900 and Kırklareli in 1900/01 and Tripoli (Trablusşam) from 1904 to 1906. The lists have no entry for 1901 to 1904. Ten provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by only 24 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to a peak of 1,000 in 1904/05, as Memur in Tripoli, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 22 years the salaries add up to 155,832 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
