Life#
Born in Bitola (Manastır) in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Besim Remzi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Besim Remzi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Bitola in 1884/85, at about 11, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 11 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places Besim Remzi in Komotini (Gümülcine) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Besim Remzi then moved to six places in nine years, from Pristina (Priştine) to Izmir (İzmir), with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1897/98. The last post was in Çeşme in 1899/1900. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 7 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 720 in 1897/98, as 2. Müdür in Vlorë, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 500 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1899/1900.
