Life#
Born in Rize in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Ahmet Hamdi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Hamdi also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Ahmet Hamdi began work in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Rize in 1889/90, at about 16, paid from the start, on 40 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1889/90, with Ahmet Hamdi in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi) in Rize, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1893/94. Next came Trabzon, Adana, Tarsus, Mersin and Jerusalem (Kudüs), five places in 11 years, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1898/99 and to director of the first grade (1. Müdür) in 1904/05. The last post was in Haifa (Hayfa) in 1905/06.
The salary went from 40 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to 1,200 in 1904/05, the peak, as 1. Müdür in Jerusalem, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. Pay rose to 30 times the first salary; fewer than 3 per cent of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more rose as far. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
