Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Rize in 1867/68 (AH 1284), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1885/86, Ali Rıza began work in Rize, paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1885/86, with Ali Rıza as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Rize, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1887/88. Next came Samsun, Hopa, Bayburt and Feres (Ferecik), four places in seven years, then Ordu from 1895 to 1901. Ali Rıza then moved to Gümüşhane in 1901/02 and Of in 1902/03. The last posts were in Trabzon from 1903 to 1907. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, fewer than 10 per cent kept one title throughout.
