Life#
Ahmet Ferit Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1867/68 (AH 1284), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 21, in 1888/89, Ahmet Ferit began work in Bursa, paid from the start, on 380 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1888/89, with Ahmet Ferit as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Bursa. Next came seven places in 11 years, from Ankara to Kayseri. The last posts were in Dinar from 1901 to 1904, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). Nine places in all, a number reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 540 in 1897/98, as 3. Müdür in Kavak, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 400 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
