Life#
Bekir Şevki Efendi was born in Divriği in 1844/45 (AH 1260) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Bekir Şevki began work in Bursa in 1888/89, at about 45, paid from the start, on 550 kuruş a month. Only 15 of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 45 or older. From the first annual entry, for 1888/89, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Bekir Şevki in the same post, Telgraf Saliselciligi, in Bursa.
