Official

Unnamed official (0087_0141, sayfa no:279)

Armenian Christian (Ermeni). Born in Divriği in 1855/56 (AH 1272). On record 1893 to 1901, 8 annual entries. Death recorded 1901/02.

Life

Born in Divriği in 1855/56 (AH 1272) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, this official was the child of a farmer (çiftçi). The official had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi).

Work began in Istanbul in 1893/94, at about 38, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. Few began so late; 49 of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 38 or older. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places the official in Galata as a postal official (Posta Memuru), where the entries run to 1895/96. The last posts were in Istanbul from 1896 to 1899 and Galata again from 1899 to 1901.

The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 400 in 1900/01, the peak, as a deliverer (Müvezzi) in Galata, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, eight years of salary come to 25,800 kuruş, 53 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1900/01; the list of 1901/02 (AH 1319) gives the status word Vefat (death).

What the sources named in this table are
Earlier annual personnel extract (original copy)
A copy of the earlier annual personnel file, read for the title wording of each year. A death taken from it is the status word Vefat in the title field of one annual list: the year is the year of that list, not a date of death.
Earlier annual personnel extract (parallel copy)
A second copy of the earlier annual personnel file, read in the same way. A death taken from it is the status word Vefat in the title field of one annual list: the year is the year of that list, not a date of death. Two copies that agree are one piece of evidence, not two.
