Life#
Mehmet Nurettin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took nine years, at the Darussifa.
Mehmet Nurettin began work in Adapazarı in 1891/92, at about 20, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with Mehmet Nurettin as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in İzmit, where the entries run to 1895/96. Mehmet Nurettin then moved to Razlog (Razlık), Drama and Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1896 to 1901, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1898/99, then Suriye from 1901 to 1909. The last post was in Istanbul, the birthplace, in 1909/10, with a rise to chief official (Başmemur).
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 1,000 in 1909/10, the peak, as Başmemur in Istanbul, when 73 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
