Life#
ETHEM FETHİ EFENDİ was born in Rhodes (Rodos) in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Aleppo (Halep) in 1889/90, at about 18, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with ETHEM FETHİ as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Aleppo, where the entries run to 1901/02. The last posts were in Damascus (Şam) from 1902 to 1906 and Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1906/07, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1902/03.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to a peak of 500 in 1902/03, as Seyyar Memur in Damascus, when half the paid officials earned less. Over 16 years the salaries add up to 69,600 kuruş, 73 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
