Life

İspiro Efendi was born in Rhodes (Rodos) in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); İspiro also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.

Work began in Rhodes in 1894/95, at about 20, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1900/01, with İspiro as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul. The last posts were in Jaffa (Yafa) from 1901 to 1903.

The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 400 in 1901/02, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Jaffa, when one in three paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 10,800 kuruş, 60 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
