Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hurşit Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hurşit began work in Istanbul in 1895/96, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1900/01, to 1904/05, every annual entry places Hurşit in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 275 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 22 per cent of paid officials earned less.
