Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Nuri Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Mehmet Nuri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 21, in 1896/97, Mehmet Nuri began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1900/01 to 1905/06 places Mehmet Nuri in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1901/02 as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru) and from 1903/04 in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi).
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 200 in 1903/04, the peak, in the Kontrol Kalemi in Istanbul, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 10,800 kuruş, 31 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
