Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Kani Efendi was the child of an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Kani also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mehmet Kani began work in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 17, paid from the start, on 80 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1900/01 to 1905/06 places Mehmet Kani in the same office, control office (Kontrol Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
