Life#
Mustafa Kâmil Bey was born in Istanbul in 1843/44 (AH 1259) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Kâmil also attended the telegraph school.
Mustafa Kâmil began work in Istanbul in 1863/64, at about 20, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for eight years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1871/72, with Mustafa Kâmil as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Üsküdar, where the entries run to 1888/89, with a rise to a post in the collections office (Tahsilat Kalemi) in 1875/76. Next came a return to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1889 to 1896, then Mahmutpasa tabyasi in 1896/97. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1897 to 1906.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to 750 in 1875/76, the peak, in the Tahsilat Kalemi in Üsküdar, when 64 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 36 years the salaries add up to 270,636 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
