Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1851/52 (AH 1268), Mustafa Asım Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1866/67, Mustafa Asım began work in Üsküdar, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1871/72, with Mustafa Asım as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Üsküdar. Next came Izmir (İzmir), Sapanca, Turgutlu (Kasaba) and Denizli, four places in eight years, then Manisa from 1879 to 1885, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1884/85. The annual lists then follow Mustafa Asım to Çanakkale from 1885 to 1888. From 1888 to 1901 the annual entries place Mustafa Asım in Aydın.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to 800 in 1876/77, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Denizli, when two in three paid officials earned less.
