Life#
Salih Sabri Efendi was born in Tekirdağ in 1848/49 (AH 1265) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "issiz". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Salih Sabri began work in Tekirdağ in 1868/69, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 480 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1870/71, places Salih Sabri in Pomorie (Ahyolu) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Sliven (İslimiye) and Çorum from 1871 to 1876, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1874/75. From 1876 to 1904 the annual entries place Salih Sabri in Bolu.
The salary went from 480 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to 1,000 in 1876/77, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Bolu, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 35 years the salaries add up to 322,980 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1903/04; the list of 1904/05 (AH 1322) gives the status word Vefat (death).
