Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1844/45 (AH 1260), Mustafa Sıdkı Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Mustafa Sıdkı had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi), and attended the telegraph school as well.
Work began in Istanbul in 1864/65, at about 20, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 480 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1864/65, with Mustafa Sıdkı as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Veliko Tarnovo (Tırnova). Next came Pleven (Plevne), Ruse (Rusçuk) and Vidin from 1866 to 1869. From 1869 to 1907 every annual entry places Mustafa Sıdkı in Yeniköy, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1874/75 as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür). Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 44 years or more.
The salary went from 480 kuruş a month in 1864/65 to 1,000 in 1875/76, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Yeniköy, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less.
