Life#
Edvar Konunyan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1844/45 (AH 1260) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Edvar Konunyan also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Edvar Konunyan began work in Istanbul in 1866/67, at about 22, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1868/69, places Edvar Konunyan in Beyoğlu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1872/73. Next came Kastamonu, İnebolu and Ortaköy from 1873 to 1877. From 1877 to 1904 every annual entry places Edvar Konunyan in Yeni camii postanesi, first as a central office official (Merkez Memuru), from 1895/96 in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi).
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 975 in 1893/94, the peak, as Merkez Memuru in Yeni camii postanesi, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 600 kuruş. In all, 36 years of salary come to 272,940 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
