Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1844/45 (AH 1260), Abdullah Hamit Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior judge (mevali). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdullah Hamit also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Arabic.
Abdullah Hamit began work in Istanbul in 1858/59, at about 15, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 6 per cent worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1865/66, places Abdullah Hamit in Hama as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Abdullah Hamit to Homs in 1866/67, and Kastamonu in 1868/69, as a chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru), then Tosya from 1869 to 1877. Abdullah Hamit then moved to Çerkeş and Serres (Siroz) from 1877 to 1885, then Melnik (Menlik) from 1885 to 1894. The last posts were in Bartın in 1894/95 and Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1895/96. Nine places on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to 700 in 1869/70, the peak, as Başmuhabere Memuru in Tosya, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1895/96.
