Life#
Ahmet Lutfu Efendi was born in Veliko Tarnovo (Tırnova) in 1843/44 (AH 1259), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "kaza muduru". At about 17, in 1860/61, Ahmet Lutfu began work in the Nufus Kalemi in Veliko Tarnovo, on a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1865/66, with Ahmet Lutfu as Sancak Baskitabeti in Veliko Tarnovo, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1875/76. Next came Beyoğlu and Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1877 to 1881, then Serres (Siroz) from 1881 to 1887. Ahmet Lutfu then moved to Cezairi bahri sefid, Erzurum and Beirut (Beyrut) from 1887 to 1896. The last posts were in Trabzon from 1896 to 1898. Seven provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 750 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to a peak of 3,150 in 1897/98, as Istinaf Mahkemesi Riyaseti in Trabzon, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 33 years the salaries add up to 643,920 kuruş, 3.1 times the median official's, a level reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The last annual entry is for 1897/98. The honours of Ahmet Lutfu were a rank (rütbe) and the Mecidi order. The workbook records two entries on written works such as "Zubdetu’l-Ecvibe".
