Life#
Mahmut Faik Efendi was born in Veliko Tarnovo (Tırnova) in 1831/32 (AH 1247) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Mahmut Faik also wrote Turkish and spoke Arabic and Persian.
At about 27, in 1858/59, Mahmut Faik began work in Veliko Tarnovo, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1861/62, with Mahmut Faik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Veliko Tarnovo, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1864/65. Mahmut Faik then moved to six places in 22 years, from Pirot (Şehirköy) to Bandırma, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1865/66. The last posts were in Istanbul from 1887 to 1890.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1861/62 to 960 in 1865/66, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Pirot, when 64 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 800 kuruş. After 20 years the salary stood below the first, 300 kuruş against 500; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The last annual entry is for 1889/90; the list of 1890/91 (AH 1308) gives the status word Vefat (death).
