Life#
Ali Medhi Bey was born in Edirne in 1831/32 (AH 1247), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Ali Medhi began work in the Nufus Kalemi in Edirne in 1847/48, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 60 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1866/67, with Ali Medhi in the Hapishane Kitabeti in Edirne, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1874/75, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1867/68. Ali Medhi then moved to Nova Zagora in 1875/76, then back to Edirne from 1876 to 1879. The last post was in Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa) in 1880/81.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to a peak of 645 in 1875/76, as Muhabere Memuru in Nova Zagora, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1880/81; the list of 1900/01 (AH 1318) gives the status word Vefat (death).
