Life#
Omer Efendi was born in Arapgir in 1831/32 (AH 1247) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a finance official (maliye memuru). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in 1850/51, at about 19, on a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1862/63 to 1884/85 places Omer in the same post, customs official (Rüsumat Memuru), in Malatya. In place of a title the lists give Vefat (death) for 1885/86.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1862/63 to a peak of 600 in 1882/83, as Rüsumat Memuru in Malatya, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 24 years of salary come to 128,220 kuruş, 80 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The list of 1885/86 (AH 1303) gives the status word Vefat (death).
