Life#
Mahmut Celalettin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1842/43 (AH 1258) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a customs official (rüsumat memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
From the first annual entry, for 1868/69, to 1895/96, every annual entry places Mahmut Celalettin in the same post, customs official (Rüsumat Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
