Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1842/43 (AH 1258) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Aziz Mahmut Bey was the child of an official (memur). Aziz Mahmut had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1856/57, at about 15, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 110 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 6 per cent worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1887/88, with Aziz Mahmut as a district governor (Kaymakam) in Gemlik. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1888 to 1894, first as Meclis Azaligi, from 1891/92 as a chief director (Başmüdür).
Pay rose from 1,750 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to a peak of 2,250 in 1891/92, as Başmüdür in Istanbul, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 174,000 kuruş, 4.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
