Life#
Ahmet Şakir Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1842/43 (AH 1258) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 20, in 1862/63, Ahmet Şakir began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 50 kuruş a month. From 1862/63 to 1878/79 every annual entry places Ahmet Şakir in Istanbul, the birthplace, with four changes of title, from collections office (Tahsilat Kalemi) to register office (Sicil Kalemi) in 1878/79. The lists give Aciga Cikarildi for 1879/80 instead of a title.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1862/63 to a peak of 800 in 1874/75, in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi) in Istanbul, when 69 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1879/80.
