Life#
Bekir Sami Efend was born in Cerkezistan in 1842/43 (AH 1258) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Bekir Sami began work in Istanbul in 1863/64, at about 21, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1864/65 to 1905/06 places Bekir Sami in Istanbul, first as a registry clerk (Mukayyit), from 1872/73 in the stamp clerkship (Pul Kitabeti) and from 1889/90 as Senedat Memuru. Only 15 of the 171 officials whose entries span 40 years or more stayed in one place throughout. Entries spanning 43 years are rare, reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1864/65 to 800 in 1872/73, the peak, in the Pul Kitabeti in Istanbul, when 70 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 32 years the salaries add up to 169,860 kuruş, 82 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
