Life#
Mehmet Talat Efen was born in Istanbul in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Saliha Sultan Vekiliharci". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Talat began work in Istanbul in 1891/92, at about 15, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. From 1895/96 to 1906/07 every annual entry places Mehmet Talat in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as Senedat Memuru, from 1897/98 in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi) and from 1900/01 in the money order office (Havalename Kalemi).
