Life#
Abdülkerim Efendi was born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Alay Katibi". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdülkerim also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 19, in 1896/97, Abdülkerim began work in Aleppo (Halep), with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1899/1900 and 1900/01, place Abdülkerim in Aleppo as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 100 kuruş a month in 1899/1900, as Muhabere Memuru in Aleppo, when fewer than 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
