Life#
Mehmet Hamdi Efendi was born in Veliko Tarnovo (Tırnova) in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Hamdi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Çankırı in 1888/89, at about 14, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 190 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Mehmet Hamdi in Çankırı as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mehmet Hamdi to Pelidozu, Kahramanmaraş (Maraş), Aleppo (Halep) and Baalbek, four places in nine years, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1902/03. For 1895 to 1898 the lists have no entry. The last post was in Preveza (Preveze) in 1904/05, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
The salary went from 190 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 720 in 1904/05, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Preveza, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
