Life#
Born in Veliko Tarnovo (Tırnova) in 1874/75 (AH 1291) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Haydar Efendi was the child of a sergeant (çavuş). Ali Haydar had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 14, in 1887/88, Ali Haydar began work in Bilecik, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Ali Haydar as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Gaziantep (Antep). Next came Edirne from 1895 to 1901, with a rise to a post in the stamp clerkship (Pul Kitabeti). The last posts were in Thessaloniki in 1901/02, as Posta Memuru and Akşehir from 1902 to 1904.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 540 in 1901/02, as Posta Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
