Life#
Hüseyin Ratıf Efendi was born in Veliko Tarnovo (Tırnova) in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Chios (Sakız) in 1891/92, at about 18, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Hüseyin Ratıf as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Chios. Hüseyin Ratıf then moved to Aradvi from 1896 to 1899, then Mentese from 1899 to 1905. The last post was in Mytilene (Midilli) in 1905/06, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 450 in 1905/06, as Posta Memuru in Mytilene, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
