Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Ahmet Hamdi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Ahmet Hamdi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 16, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Ahmet Hamdi in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) in Istanbul, the birthplace. Ahmet Hamdi then moved to Hereke in 1895/96, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1896 to 1904, with a rise to a post in the Muhasebe Kalemi.
Pay rose from 40 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 550 in 1899/1900, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when 68 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
