Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292), Mehmet Cemalettin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior army captain (kolağası). Mehmet Cemalettin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1892/93, at about 17, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1893/94 to 1910/11 places Mehmet Cemalettin in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1907/08 as Maas Baskitabeti.
