Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292), Mehmet Fahrettin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a teacher (muallim). Mehmet Fahrettin had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1893/94, at about 18, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1893/94 to 1909/10 places Mehmet Fahrettin in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the register office (Sicil Kalemi), from 1901/02 as a registry clerk (Mukayyit), from 1902/03 as Basmukayyit and from 1907/08 as a chief clerkship (Başkitabet).
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 600 in 1909/10, the peak, as Başkitabet in Istanbul, when 56 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 17 years of salary come to 55,680 kuruş, 58 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
