Life#
Ahmed Talat Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ahmed Talat began work in the Evkaf Kalemi in Istanbul in 1885/86, at about 16, paid from the start, on 45 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1887/88 to 1906/07 places Ahmed Talat in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as Evkaf Memuru, from 1888/89 in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi).
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 500 in 1905/06, the peak, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when half the paid officials earned less. Over 20 years the salaries add up to 66,360 kuruş, 56 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
