Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287), Ahmet Hurşit Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Hurşit also wrote Turkish and spoke Arabic.
At about 18, in 1888/89, Ahmet Hurşit began work in Istanbul, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Ahmet Hurşit in İskenderun as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Ahmet Hurşit to Aleppo (Halep) from 1896 to 1904. The last post was in Şanlıurfa (Urfa) in 1904/05.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96, as Muhabere Memuru in İskenderun, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over ten years pay ended where it began, at 400 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
