Life#
Born in Leskovik in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Mehmet Akif Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sergeant (çavuş). Mehmet Akif had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Ioannina (Yanya) in 1890/91, at about 18, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Mehmet Akif in İskenderun as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mehmet Akif to Elassona (Alasonya) from 1896 to 1901, then Ioannina, Thessaloniki (Selanik) and Gjirokastër (Ergiri) from 1901 to 1905, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1903/04. The last post was in Prizren in 1905/06, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 720 in 1905/06, as 2. Müdür in Prizren, when three in four paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
