Life#
Hacı Osman Sabri Efendi was born in Tokat in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Osman Sabri also wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 18, in 1893/94, Osman Sabri began work in Tokat, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Osman Sabri in Elassona (Alasonya) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Osman Sabri then moved to Jeddah (Cidde), Kahramanmaraş (Maraş), Aleppo (Halep) and Beirut (Beyrut), four places in seven years. The last post was in Adana in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 630 in 1898/99, as Muhabere Memuru in Jeddah, when three in four paid officials earned less. Over ten years pay ended where it began, at 400 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1905/06. Osman Sabri probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre Osmanlı döneminde Tokatlı devlet memurları ( ..." by ÜMMÜHAN UĞURLU (2013) (the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree).
