Life#
Hasan Tevfik Efendi was born in Çorlu in 1875/76 (AH 1292), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1890/91, Hasan Tevfik began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1896/97, places Hasan Tevfik in Thessaloniki (Selanik) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Hasan Tevfik to Skopje (Üsküp), Kir and Aydın from 1899 to 1906, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1900/01. The last post was in Jerusalem (Kudüs) in 1906/07.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 500 in 1900/01, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Kir, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 400 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
