Life#
Born in Çorlu in 1883/84 (AH 1301) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa Zeki Efendi was the child of a lieutenant or candidate official (mülazım). Mustafa Zeki had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 13, in 1896/97, Mustafa Zeki began work in Çorlu, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1902/03, with Mustafa Zeki as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Çorlu, the birthplace. The last post was in Edirne in 1904/05.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to a peak of 400 in 1904/05, as Muhabere Memuru in Edirne, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less.
