Life#
Mehmet Necip Efendi was born in Çorlu in 1883/84 (AH 1301) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Necip also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Çorlu in 1900/01, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1903/04, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Mehmet Necip in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Çorlu, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Çorlu, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less.
