Life#
Ali Hayri Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1883/84 (AH 1301) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Hayri also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 19, in 1903/04, Ali Hayri began work in Sarıyer, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1903/04 to 1907/08 places Ali Hayri in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Büyükdere.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 100 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Büyükdere, when 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 6,000 kuruş, 23 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
