Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1883/84 (AH 1301) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mustafa Burhan Efendi was the child of a senior army captain (kolağası). Mustafa Burhan had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 19, in 1903/04, Mustafa Burhan began work in Büyükdere, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1904/05, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Mustafa Burhan in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Büyükdere.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to a peak of 150 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Büyükdere, when 5 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 6,600 kuruş, 32 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
