Loi Ferit Efendi

Latin Catholic (Latin). Born in Deir ez-Zor (Deyrizor) in 1883/84 (AH 1301). On record 1904 to 1907, 3 annual entries.

Life

Loi Ferit Efendi was born in Deir ez-Zor (Deyrizor) in 1883/84 (AH 1301) into the Latin Catholic (Latin) community; the father was a pharmacist (eczacı). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). In all Loi Ferit knew five languages, Arabic, English, French, Italian and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.

Work began in Tripoli (Trablusgarp) in 1903/04, at about 19, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 800 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1904/05, places Loi Ferit in Misrata as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). From 1905 to 1907 the annual entries place Loi Ferit in Siirt. The farthest post, Misrata, lay about 2,350 km from Deir ez-Zor, and fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 800 kuruş a month in 1904/05, as Muhabere Memuru in Misrata, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.

Places in order of time

Each number is a stop: the birthplace, the place of first work, then every place of the annual entries in turn. The year beside an arrow is the first entry at the new place.
