Life#
Born in Acre (Akka) in 1883/84 (AH 1301), Elyas Meracel Efendi came from the Maronite Christian (Maruni) community; the father was an official (memur). Elyas Meracel had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
At about 20, in 1904/05, Elyas Meracel began work in Beirut (Beyrut), with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1904/05 to 1907/08 places Elyas Meracel in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Deir al-Qamar (Deyrülkamer).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1904/05, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Deir al-Qamar, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 12,000 kuruş, 59 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
