Life

Born in Acre (Akka) in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Edip Efendi was the child of a head of a sub-district (nahiye müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Edip also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.

Work began in Adana in 1896/97, at about 18, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1902/03, places Mehmet Edip in Toyran as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last post was in Gevgelija (Gevgili) in 1903/04.

Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to a peak of 400 in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Gevgelija, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
